World Mental Health Day is celebrated every October 10 to raise awareness of the importance of psychological well-being and care for mental disorders. It is estimated that 1 in 4 people in the world will suffer from a mental health problem in their lifetime, a reality that is affecting more and more individuals and families.
To raise awareness of the reality of many people with a mental health diagnosis, we are featuring Gema’s story, the protagonist of our awareness-raising campaign.
Gema is 30 years old. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder five years ago, and after a depressive crisis, she had to quit her job. Today, thanks to medical treatment and psychotherapy, she feels ready to re-enter the workforce. Before her job interview, she talks to a stranger in a bar and shares her fears and hopes… without knowing that minutes later it will be the same person who will be interviewing her.
Gema’s story symbolically reflects the difficulties and biases that people with a mental health diagnosis face when it comes to finding a job.
Therefore, this date is an opportunity to raise awareness of the employment discrimination currently in place and to promote policies that foster employment and social inclusion.
Our mental health project supports individuals with psychosocial disabilities in their workplace inclusion. It works with companies to overcome barriers and identify unconscious biases, enabling them to improve the integration of people with disabilities due to a mental health diagnosis.
